Weller Pottery

People like to collect a variety of things. Many like to collect items that make great showpieces for their living room or a side room dedicated to collectibles. For some of these folks their tastes may lie in the direction of pottery...especially vases and bowls. One of the classiest collections in existence is the works by Samuel Weller that began the Weller pottery line. Many of his collections are most well known in vase and bowl creations.
This story begins in 1872 when the Weller Company began to fashion their pottery works for marketing. One of his more promising lines of pottery works was the Louwelsa line that was a spin-off of his purchasing the Lonhuda pottery Company. Over time half a thousand variations of this production would be made in the form of vases and bowls. This line was not as famous as the works of the McCoy Pottery Company, but they were very much sought after.
The Louwelsa pottery by Weller developed an entire era of new pottery lovers because of its unique lines and design direction. To this day, the Louwelsa holds a lead for the group. Weller was hitting a zenith with these works and had a lot to be proud of.
By the turn of the Century, Weller brought on board a noted artisan, Jacques Sicard. The Sicard line by Weller went for almost 6 years as one of Weller’s most prized production lines. Sicard’s way of design was a classic line of color and imagination. This did much to lift the Weller name globally...even when Sicard left the company. The Sicard line ended in the late 1910’s. To this day, much of the Weller Sicard productions are a collectors dream.
Due to his vision for bringing on board solid artisans, Samuel Weller was seeing his company grow with new electricity and was becoming profitable to the stockholders. Through the next couple of decades Weller Pottery continued to market a variety of production lines...such as Lasa, Glendale and Hudson . The Hudson line remains today as one of Weller’s greatest achievements to collectors world-wide.
The hand crafting work at Weller ended in the 1930’s and by late 1940, the company ceased to operate. For Sam Weller his company brought to the world a whole dimension of fine pottery works. His legacy continues to live on as his work is still sought after. |
