Hull Pottery

Pottery in early America is an invention that came from a need of a function rather then a desire. Early farmers “needed” to be able to have containers for hauling water and other items. Vessels for hauling water came from the earthen clay of nearby riverbanks and streams. These farmers had land tracts that potters would start to mine clay from to fashion their pottery companies. Over 40 such potters existed in Ohio around 1850 in a 3-mile radius near Crooksville. Hull was one of these pottery companies that would eventually become a namesake from these early pioneers.

The Hull Company went from creating simple tableware to a highly fashioned art ware on their pieces. For over 80 years, the Hull Company developed work that included table pieces, pots, and stoneware. Eventually they began to focus on tiles as a mainstay of their operation. They are as diverse in their productions as they are in the imagination that made them company they are today.

Hull is an outstanding creator of innovative and original fashions of vases and bowls. One of their more eye-catching works is the Magnolia Tassle vase. This horn dipper with the curled and circled handle is a unique perspective of the type of quality Hull is known for. Another one of their historical pieces is the Little Red Riding hood Cookie Jar. This fashion creates a flourish in any collector’s showcase of Hull Pottery Ware.

When Addis Hull founded the company after the turn of the century, it is doubtful he even realized the reach his creation would extend to in the art world. His early work was to fashion simple stoneware to meet the needs of families. However, just like the many innovators of their time, Hull’s work was not meant to lay wasted on the just the ordinary.

Pottery by Hull breaks past the commonplace, and jumps head first into extreme potentials. His work builds upon the early pioneers of American pottery and flourishes. Hull Pottery is a statement that porcelain is not meant to be just a wall piece, or even only for mealtime...porcelain should express the tastes of its owners and become a voice of quality and imagination.
