Shopping for antique art pottery can be exhilarating. To actually see something of historical or heirloom quality drop into your lap...so to speak...without increased loads of work. Now obviously you will not have the great luck of finding a Ming Dynasty piece that came down from that ancient period of Oriental legacy. But, the thrill of finding a piece of ceramic that stands out and says, “hey I was there when Washington crossed the Delaware” or “Remember the Alamo” can peak any interest especially with collectors or historical buff. So what do you look for when seeking and finding those pieces that reflect heritage or even just make for a unique conversation piece?

Consider the idea of looking online. Many people know the local shops and bargain pottery houses, but not everyone has gone the way of cyber shopping yet in this niche.
Many fine pieces can be located at quality sites dedicated to antique pottery. There is such an unlimited array of styles and brands of pottery pieces to garner the attention of the novice and the lathered collector. Just remember that collecting is to be fun and build your knowledge base of different styles of antique pottery.

One consideration is the price to be spent. Know in advance, what you want your budget to be at for this endeavor. Are you willing to set a maximum for ceramics at 50 dollars...at 1000 dollars? What is your range of ebb and flow for this new or continuing hobby? With age and style comes the raising of the bar for prices. Are you committed to meeting that standard or do you need to scale back for a while? Know your limits.

Be informed. Take the time to learn about the specifics of the type and style of the pieces you relish. Whether it is a mug, vase, or plate, know what you are looking for. then when at the sites checking out the inventory you can scan and check the pictures and descriptions to be a wise shopper. You do not have to purchase the first thing you see. In fact, you may want to compare against similar entries at different sites to know what you are getting. Become familiar with the aspects you looking for and see which ones tend to increase their value and others go down the scale. Remember, this is for you and your interest...make the best with it to have a hobby you genuinely love.
